Australia 21 is a non-profit organisation started in Canberra in 2001. It is grappling with some of the issues that challenge our future such as climate change, energy, land and water use, the realization of our children's potential and the way Australia relates to its neighbours. These issues are large and complex and are not being adequately dealt with by conventional research institutions and funding agencies. Australia 21 is adding to the already formidable research potential by developing open, sustained networks of serious thinkers and researchers from a range of disciplines and institutions and by actively facilitating the exploration of alternative ways of thinking about and responding to the emerging challenges.

Here are some of the programs Australia 21 currently has under development:

• Pathways to success and well being for Australia's young people[1]

• A Sustainable Australia: Options for Australia’s energy futures[2]

• Productive and resilient ecosystems

• Enhancing Australia’s Security and Prosperity in the 21st Century

• Tipping Points in Australia's Future

• The next big question
